Initial Site Assessment

The first step in our soil and tissue testing process involves a thorough on-site assessment. One of our ISA Certified Arborists will walk your property to visually inspect your trees and landscape.

We’ll note details like tree species, appearance, location, and any visible signs of problems. This allows us to determine which specific tests will be most useful and target sample collection accordingly.

We’ll also ask questions about your landscape management practices, goals for the property, and anything else relevant to getting a complete picture.

For example, are certain areas slow to establish or struggling? Have you noticed differences in tree vitality or growth? Any input you can provide helps guide useful testing.

Soil Sampling

Next, we’ll collect soil samples using proper sampling techniques and tools. For individual trees, we take samples from multiple spots within the root zone, usually the dripline. For general landscape analyses, we collect samples in a zigzag pattern across the site.

Proper sampling depth depends on the tree species and goals. For nutrient testing, 4-6 inches is typical. Trace element tests may require deeper 12-24-inch samples.

We use augers, trowels, and other specialized equipment to gather samples efficiently without contamination.

The quantity needed depends on testing lab requirements. About 1-2 quarts total provides enough soil for a comprehensive analysis.

We place samples into labeled bags and ensure proper storage conditions before shipment. Accurate labeling ensures test results correspond to the correct location.

Tissue Sampling

In conjunction with soil tests, we also collect tissue samples from your trees’ leaves, needles, twigs, or other living parts.

This shows how well nutrients are being absorbed and utilized by the tree. Deficiencies or toxicities show up here before visible symptoms emerge.

We’ll use pole pruners, ladders, or bucket trucks to safely collect tissue from different areas and heights within your trees’ canopies.

Enough tissue is taken to provide a representative sample but minimize effects on the tree. Tissue is handled carefully to avoid contamination and degradation before analysis.

Lab Testing & Analysis

We partner with a respected independent lab to perform the actual soil and tissue tests. Samples are delivered or shipped to their facilities in proper containers with documentation.

The lab uses standardized procedures and rigorous quality controls to produce accurate, scientifically valid results.

Soil tests measure pH, organic matter, nutrient levels like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, micronutrients like iron and manganese, salinity, and more.

Tissue tests measure total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other macro and micronutrient levels. Sophisticated equipment and proven methodologies identify values down to parts per million ranges.

Experts at the lab analyze the results and prepare detailed reports. The data is compared against optimal ranges for your tree species and site specifics to identify deficiencies, toxicities, pH issues, or other problems. They’ll provide management recommendations based on the test findings.

Results Consultation & Treatment Plan

Once we receive the detailed lab reports, our arborists will schedule a consultation to explain the results and propose an optimized treatment plan for your property.

We’ll outline exactly which amendments, fertilizers, or other interventions are recommended to correct any issues revealed by the tests. You’ll get science-backed solutions tailored to your specific trees’ needs.
